SEBOKENG. - A 30-year-old man’s red BMW triggered a tragic chain of events when it crashed into four learners in Boitumelo on Wednesday afternoon.

The driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle and knocked down the children who were on their way back from school. The car eventually came to a halt after ramming down the front gate of one of the houses alongside the street. The four learners have been identified as Palesa Maticoe (15), Xoliswa Modupi (13), Sibongile Ramasiya (13) and Jabulile Mothupi (14). All the children sustained serious head and leg injuries and Mothupi had to be operated on twice at the Sebokeng Hospital due to the nature of her injuries.

The homeowner whose front gate was damaged by the car, Emily Xaba says that she heard a big bang and soon afterwards all chaos broke loose. Members of the community allegedly assaulted the suspect in anger before concerned teachers of the Letsemeng Primary School rescued him.

The citizens of Boitumelo bayed for the man’s blood as they gathered in their droves outside the school’s premises. When the police took the suspect away, the angry residents threw stones and members of the Sebokeng SAPS returned fire with rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Not even an emotional plea by community leader Lazarus Mohlala could defuse the situation.

As the police drove off with the suspect, the angry community members set the BMW alight. Police spokesperson Superintendent Maria Mazibuko says the suspect also sustained minor injuries but is now detained in police cells and that he is not in possession of a driver’s licence. "The suspect faces charges of reckless and negligent driving, driving without a valid driver’s licence, as well as attempted murder," says Mazibuko.

Another macabre muthi discovery, witch-hunt will follow PDF Print E-mail

SEBOKENG. - Hundreds of people could only cover their noses when a well-known sangoma unearthed a mysterious muthi package from one of the houses in Boitumelo on Thursday morning.

The man, who together with the family that called for his help, initially refused this journalist access to the yard in which the muthi was being sought. "Please do not take pictures," says the popular sangoma who also refused Vaal Weekly his real name, but is known as Nkosana Mothisa.

An hour went by and when the people of Boitumelo increased in attendance, the family agreed to have pictures taken but only those of the muthi and not the sangoma. The residents stood and watched in awe as the sangoma dug out a monkey’s skull wrapped in plastic and filled with several items including a dead snake, razor blade, an old pot scrapper, human hair, a rat and chicken feet. There were sighs of disbelief when the sangoma unwrapped the plastic to show what was inside as no one expected to see human faeces and a green ten rand note. Petrol was poured on the items and they were set on fire after the sangoma had sprinkled cayenne pepper over it. "This is unbelievable! We must find the person who put these things here," says one member of the audience. There is talk of a second episode of this drama, which will see the sangoma identify a witch in Boitumelo.

Family torn by suspected gas poisoning PDF Print E-mail

SEBOKENG. - It was tears and wailing for the Mabaso-family when the lifeless body of Sicelo Mabaso was discovered next to his unconscious wife on Monday morning in the two-roomed backyard shack that the family has been renting.

Mabaso’s bizarre death left neighbours in shock and with many unanswered questions as it is not clear what killed the man. Many suspect that gas from a heater or an electric heater could have been the culprit that led to this unwelcome end. Another strange discovery was that Sicelo’s car was still idling in the garage and he was dressed in his overalls, which suggests that he was on the way to work when he met his death.

Papi Matlho, a man who lives in the same yard as Mabaso, says that he became suspicious when he saw the couple’s 8-year-old son walking outside dressed only in a vest and looking very dizzy. When Matlho went to investigate, he found that there was a strong gas smell in the room.

"When we entered, we broke the windows and the door of the house to let out some of the gas smell. At the same time we called for help from neighbours and other community members," says Matlho.

Bongani Hlongwane, who was featured in last week’s edition of Vaal Weekly for allegedly being fired from work for declaring that he is HIV-positive, was first to get into the room and remove the gas cylinder. "I couldn’t even last for more than ten seconds in that house because the smell was very strong. I went back and dragged the lady out of the house as I could see that she was struggling to breath," relates Hlongwane.

The women and child were then rushed to hospital. Unfortunately Mabaso was only discovered later near the door leading to the garage. He was already dead at the time.

An investigation has been launched. Police spokesperson Inspector Molefe Mokoena says that an inquest has been launched.

"We are still awaiting the postmortem results to determine the cause of death," concludes Mokoena.

Dead babies make a comeback PDF Print E-mail

EVATON. - Children are a precious gift from God to some, but to others it seems like they are a curse.

An Emfuleni Municipality refuse removal truck was offloading rubbish when self-employed recyclers discovered the body of a baby girl wrapped in a black refuse bag - an example of just how cruel people can be towards babies.

One of the recyclers, who was furious when he spoke to Vaal Weekly, confirms that the body was that of a fully developed baby girl. "I don’t understand why people do not condomise. Killing a human being like this shows that they have no conscience!" he says.

Michael Ngqolozane, an Emfuleni Municipal worker, was barely shocked upon the discovery. "I have seen so many gruesome foetuses and dead babies. I still do not understand how these children can be conceived only to be killed," he says.

Police spokesperson Inspector Molefe Mokoena says that they thought that cases of concealment of birth and children being killed were decreasing, but now it seems that these atrocities are making a comeback. "A murder case has been opened and no arrests have been made. We plead for community assistance," says Mokoena.

SHARPEVILLE. - Police are on the lookout for three suspects who robbed a store in Tshepiso recently. The suspects are alleged to have entered the store and ordered everyone to lie down and took cash and airtime from the store.

Sharpeville police spokesperson Inspector Aubrey Moopeloa says that three suspects, one armed, entered the store and ordered everyone to lie down. "Thereafter they took an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime vouchers to the value of R2 800. They then fled on foot," says Moopeloa.

The business is owned by a Mr Rahman, a man of Indian origin who rents the premises from Mr Tshabalala in Tshepiso. A case of business robbery is being investigated by the Sharpeville SAPS and Moopeloa pleads with members of the community who might shed any light on the incident to contact the police with relevant information.
